Taking Lecture Notes




Taking Effective Notes
- writing down idea and reading in own words.


Why take notes?
  • Helps us to pay attention
  • Helps us to study
  • Helps us to improve our memory
  • Helps us to take ownership of idea
  • Helps us to engage our senses
  • Helps us to organize and process data
                                 

Why review notes?

- We lose 80% of what we hear if it isnot reviewed within a few hours.
- Identity any questions
- Not enough time to absorb all

          Take time EVERYDAY to Review NOTE 



Before class
- Review notes from the day before
- Write the date at the top of your paper for notes


How do we take notes?


- Date and label notes
-Give ourselve space to write
- Use abbreviations and symbols


  • Use an outline to show
            - Main ideas
            - Supports
            - Examples
  • Use your own language
  • Useful Abbreviations




How do we prepare for class? 

- Do pre-reading and homework
- Review syllabus
- Preview previous notes
- Look up key words
- Plan on listening 80% of the time
- Write the date at the top of your paper
- Leave a space to write later info


While taking notes

- Be an aggressive, not a passive, listener
- Be an active listener
- Ask questions



Preparing and Reviewing BEFORE lecture even starts !

- Search more info from internet for us to more understanding with something subject
- Easy to understand in class



Key actions to note as you OBSERVE
  • Be alert to repetition
      - when lecturer repeats specific point, make a note of it
  • Watch the board / overhead
     - lecturer write something, the material is important
  • Notice the lecturer interest level
      - lecturer is excited about something, it is likely will out in exam
