Academic Integrity & Performance

Avoiding Plagiarism

Many student are guilty of plagiarism when they write reports, assignments and research papers.

                                               WHAT IS PLAGIARISM ?

Plagiarism is an act which is by idea, action or words from other people or their invention of another person and claim to be proud that is your own creation. For example, you can create your own gadget which is robot and games that is very cool to play and can make some money if its popular but your friend took that idea and sell that gadget to other company without giving you credit or commercial. That's one of the example for plagiarism.

The most common offense under the Academic Code of Conduct is plagiarism, which the Code defines as "the presentation of the work of another person, in whatever form, as one's own or without proper acknowledgement" (Article 19a).

                                         HOW TO PREVENT PLAGIARISM

People often think there's no way they can avoid plagiarism if there is a way they won't even know. Lucky you , here are several ways to prevent this type of crime.

Paraphrasing → Express the meaning of ( the writer/ speaker/ something written or                                    spoken) using different words, especially to achieve greater clarity.
Referencing → Provide ( a book or article ) with eitations of authorities

                                         1.    STEPS TO PARAPHRASING

1) Reword
    - Place words by using synonyms

2)  Rearrange
     - Active to passive, passive to active

3) Recheck
    - Make sure the meaning is same as original topic

Example:

1) Exercising is very positive for the immune system. People should exercise at least three times a           week .
⇘        Exercising gives advantages to immune system. It should be done at least three times a week.

2) Part time job allows students to gain extra income to support their financial. However, students           need to be wise in managing their time for work and study.
    ⇘
Students can get additional income when they work part time. However, they have to plan their         time for work and study.

2.    STEPS TO REFERENCING

Referencing - This is an other way to avoid plagiarism by adding a referencing page. This must be specific details including the author's name, date, the date of publication, title and source.

Example : John Manne . (2015) . MAZE RUNNER. Singapore : James Vible

3. APA is American Psychological Association. It can cite any information in 2 different ways.

  • Within the text and in referencing at the end of the text
  • Make one page for referencing

4. Make sure to edit your assignment and making sure they aren't any plagiarism before submit to           them.
